Zetia Precautions and Warnings

There are a number of Zetia precautions and warnings to be aware of. For example, because Zetia can potentially interact with numerous other drugs, you should tell your healthcare provider (prior to taking Zetia) about all of the medications you are currently taking. Also, Zetia could potentially harm an unborn child, so a pregnant woman should take it only if the benefits outweigh the possible risk to her fetus. Some other precautions include the safety of taking Zetia while nursing, the risk of increased liver enzymes in some people taking the drug, and people who should not take Zetia (such as those who have active liver disease or unexplained high liver enzymes).

 

Zetia: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking
 Zetia® (ezetimibe) if you have:
 
  • Liver disease or liver failure
  • Kidney disease or kidney failure
  • Gallbladder disease or a history of gallstones
  • Any muscle problems
  • Any allergies to medicines.

 

Also let your healthcare provider know if you:
 
  • Drink alcohol regularly
  • Are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding.
     
Also, tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you are currently taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
 
Finally, make sure to contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness while taking Zetia (especially if you also feel ill or have a fever).
