The prescription medication WelChol® (colesevelam hydrochloride) helps lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) in people who cannot lower their cholesterol enough through lifestyle modifications alone. In clinical studies, people taking the drug were able to lower their LDL by up to 18 percent. WelChol should be used only as part of a cholesterol treatment program, along with diet and exercise.
