Why Might Vytorin Cause Cancer?
If, indeed, it turns out that
Vytorin actually does increase the risk of cancer, it will be important to find out exactly why. Currently, there is one main theory. Vytorin is a combination medication that contains
ezetimibe (
Zetia®) and
simvastatin (
Zocor®). Simvastatin is not linked to cancer; therefore, it is thought that the increased cancer risk (if it truly exists) is likely due to the ezetimibe component. This medication decreases the absorption of
cholesterol in the body, but it also decreases the absorption of
plant sterols, which are though to have anti-cancer properties.
Cancer and Vytorin: What Is the Verdict?
Unfortunately, at this time, there is no clear "verdict." While there is probably no need for panic, this is an issue that needs further examining. It can be expected that more information will become available in the coming months and years; this information will likely shed more light on this subject.
