Breastfeeding and Vytorin: An Overview
It is unknown if
Vytorin® (
ezetimibe/simvastatin) is safe for use during breastfeeding. The manufacturer recommends that women not breastfeed while taking this drug. However, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking this Vytorin if you are breastfeeding or plan to start.
Can I Take Vytorin While Breastfeeding?
No studies have been done to see if
simvastatin (one of the components of Vytorin) passes through breast milk in humans. Studies have shown that
ezetimibe (the other component) does pass through breast milk in rats, although it is not known if the same is true for humans. It is also not clear if Vytorin would cause significant problems in a nursing infant. More importantly, the
effects of high cholesterol do not cause problems for many years or even decades. Therefore, if a woman does not take Vytorin or other
cholesterol medications while breastfeeding, it will likely have only a minimal impact on her long-term risks. Therefore, it is best to wait until you have weaned your child before starting treatment.
