Vascepa Side Effects

Clinical trials on Vascepa have shown that joint pain was the most commonly reported problem in people who took this drug, occurring in 2.3 percent of people. Some side effects of Vascepa can also be serious, such as vomiting of blood, vision changes, or a severe headache. These reactions should be reported to your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Vascepa Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Vascepa™ (icosapent ethyl) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Vascepa. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Vascepa

Vascepa has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received the real medication, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it is possible to see what Vascepa side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group who took the placebo.

In these studies, there was only one side effect that occurred "commonly" (in this case, commonly was arbitrarily defined as occurring in more than 2 percent of people) and more often with Vascepa compared to the placebo. This side effect was joint pain (known medically as arthralgia). In studies, 2.3 percent of people taking Vascepa had joint pain, compared with 1 percent of people taking the placebo.

The prescribing information for Vascepa also mentions that throat pain was a side effect seen in clinical studies, although presumably it did not occur commonly (the exact percentage is not mentioned).
