All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An “AB” rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic Tricor versions currently available have an “AB” rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Tricor.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
It should be noted that there are several legitimate, FDA-approved versions of generic fenofibrate that are not equivalent to Tricor and that cannot be used interchangeably by your pharmacist, unless your healthcare provider approves. Some of the generic versions are not the same strengths as Tricor. Also, the formulation of some of the generic products is significantly different.
For example, Tricor can be taken with or without food. Some of the generic fenofibrate medications must be taken with food, since taking them on an empty stomach decreases the absorption of the medication. While these generic medications may serve as alternatives to Tricor, they cannot be considered generic versions of it. If you have questions about whether a particular generic is a true equivalent for Tricor, ask your pharmacist.
