Generic Tricor

When Will There Be a Generic Tricor?

There have already been a few contentious legal battles about the possibility of generic versions of Tricor. As the result of a settlement of one such legal battle, a generic version was expected to become available as early as March 2011. However, that date has come and gone, with no generic Tricor yet. The settlement did stipulate that certain circumstances could delay that date until July 2012.

Is Fenofibrate a Generic Tricor?

No, it isn't. Fenofibrate is Tricor's active ingredient, not a generic version of the drug. People often make the mistake of referring to a drug's active ingredient as its "generic name." However, a medicine's generic name is different than a generic version of it. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off patent and another company (besides the original manufacturer) must have made the product. None of the currently available generic fenofibrate medications are equivalent to Tricor.
