High cholesterol runs in my family. How do I know if I have high cholesterol? What are the symptoms?

Answer

The easiest and surest way to know if you have high cholesterol is to have a fasting "lipid profile" blood test. This test will tell you your total cholesterol level, as well as the breakdown of the individual types.
 
High cholesterol is a risk factor for several diseases, but does not usually cause noticeable symptoms. If high cholesterol runs in your family, let your healthcare provider know. He or she may want to check your cholesterol levels earlier or more frequently than would be normal in someone without a family history of high cholesterol.
