Can High Blood Pressure Cause High Cholesterol?

I recently found out that my cholesterol levels are high. I also have high blood pressure. I'm wondering if the two are related. Can high blood pressure cause high cholesterol?

Answer

The two conditions are somewhat related, in the sense that unhealthy lifestyle choices contribute to both conditions. However, high blood pressure does not cause high cholesterol or vice-versa. If you have high cholesterol and high blood pressure, this means that you automatically have two (if not more) risk factors for heart disease. Your healthcare provider may decide to be more aggressive when treating your blood pressure and cholesterol.
