Red yeast rice is a type of supplement that is commonly used in Asian food and that may help lower cholesterol. It results from the fermentation of rice using a certain type of yeast. Under certain conditions and using a specific kind of rice, the fermentation process can cause the red yeast rice to contain lovastatin, a potent cholesterol-lowering drug. The FDA considers any red yeast rice supplement that contains lovastatin to be an "unapproved drug."
