Pravachol® (pravastatin sodium) is a cholesterol medication that is available by prescription. By blocking the enzyme that controls the rate of cholesterol production, the drug can increase the liver's ability to collect and get rid of LDL ("bad cholesterol"), increase HDL ("good cholesterol"), and decrease triglycerides. Pravachol is also approved to prevent heart disease and heart-related problems. While most people tolerate the medicine well, potential side effects include muscle or joint pain, constipation, and the common cold.
