Pravachol Dosage for Children

The recommended dose for children (ages 8 to 13 years old) with high cholesterol is Pravachol 20 mg once a day. For children ages 14 to 18 years old, the recommended dosage is Pravachol 40 mg once a day.
If your child does not reach his or her cholesterol goal on the starting dosage, your healthcare provider may choose to increase the dose. The Pravachol dosage can also be decreased if side effects occur.

General Information on Dosing With Pravachol

If you are taking Pravachol, keep the following information in mind:
  • The medication can be taken at any time during the day.
  • To maintain even levels of Pravachol in your body, make sure it is taken at the same time each day.
  • The medication can be taken with or without food.
  • Swallow your Pravachol dose with a drink of water.
  • For Pravachol to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. The medication will not work if you stop taking it.
  • If you are taking a bile acid sequestrant, make sure to take your dose of Pravachol more than one hour before the bile acid sequestrant or more than four hours after. Bile acid sequestrants include:
