Cholesterol Home > Generic Lipofen

There are no generic Lipofen products licensed for sale at this time. Brand-name Lipofen is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic versions from being manufactured in the United States. The earliest possible date that a generic version could become available is January 2015, when the patent expires.

Is a Generic Version of Lipofen Available?

Lipofen® (fenofibrate) is a prescription cholesterol medication. It belongs to a group of medications known as fibrates. The drug is approved for the treatment of unhealthy cholesterol levels (such as high "bad" cholesterol or low "good" cholesterol) and high triglycerides.
Lipofen is manufactured by Galephar Pharmaceutical Research, Inc. and is marketed and distributed by Kowa Pharmaceuticals America, Inc. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Lipofen from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will Generic Lipofen Be Available?

Currently, the patent for Lipofen is set to expire in January 2015. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version of Lipofen could become available. However, there are other circumstances that could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period of Lipofen. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Lipofen uses. Once Lipofen goes off patent, there may be several companies that will manufacture a generic Lipofen drug.

Is Lipofen the Same as Fenofibrate?

Fenofibrate is the active ingredient in Lipofen, as well as several other similar medications. Some of these fenofibrate medications are available in generic form. None of these other brand-name or generic fenofibrate medications are technically equivalent or interchangeable with Lipofen, due to the unique technology used to make the medication and the capsules (in which the medication is dissolved in a semisolid lipid substance).
