As a statin medication, Lipitor works by blocking a particular enzyme, which controls the rate of cholesterol production in the body. This causes the liver to make less cholesterol. Although most people tolerate this medication well, side effects are possible and may include headaches, diarrhea, and muscle pain. Before starting treatment with Lipitor, make sure your healthcare provider is aware of any other medical conditions you may have, as well as any other medications you are currently taking (including vitamins and herbal supplements).
