Lipitor® (atorvastatin calcium) is a medication commonly prescribed for the treatment of high cholesterol and high triglycerides. It is also approved for preventing cardiovascular disease. By blocking a specific enzyme that controls the rate of cholesterol production in the body, Lipitor can increase HDL cholesterol ("good cholesterol"), decrease triglycerides, and increase the liver's ability to collect and get rid of LDL cholesterol ("bad cholesterol"). Lipitor, which belongs to a class of drugs called statins, comes in tablet form and is typically taken once daily.
