While doctors and scientists do not know the specific causes of high triglycerides, they do know certain factors that can increase a person's risk of developing the condition. These risk factors include excessive alcohol use, being obese or overweight, a very high carbohydrate diet, and physical inactivity. However, inadequate fasting is probably the most common cause of high triglycerides because triglycerides in the blood increase following meals and can remain increased for up to 10 hours.
