Reducing Cholesterol

Fibrates
Fibrates lower LDL somewhat, but are used mainly to treat high triglyceride and low HDL levels. When used with a statin, these cholesterol lowering medications may increase the chance of muscle problems.
 
An example of a fibrate medication used in reducing cholesterol is gemfibrozil (Lopid®).
 

Reducing Cholesterol: Things to Remember

While cholesterol serves an important purpose in keeping the body healthy, having high levels in the blood for long periods of time can greatly increase your risk of serious medical problems, including heart disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, and other heart and blood vessel problems.
 
Reducing cholesterol is a challenge that requires both commitment and care from you and your healthcare providers. Whatever approach you take, making a lifelong commitment to this plan is a worthy goal.
