Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors

These cholesterol drugs lower LDL and can be used alone or in combination with statin drugs. Cholesterol absorption inhibitors act within the intestine to block cholesterol absorption.
 
One example of cholesterol absorption inhibitors used for lowering cholesterol is ezetimibe (Zetia®).
 

Combining Drugs for Cholesterol Treatment

If your goal LDL level is not reached after 3 months of taking a single cholesterol medication, your healthcare provider may consider starting a second medicine along with it. Combining cholesterol medications can:
 
  • Increase cholesterol-lowering effects
  • Reverse or slow the advance of atherosclerosis
  • Further decrease the chance of a heart attack or related death.
     
The use of low doses of each medicine may help reduce the side effects of the drugs.

Taking all these steps together may lessen the amount of drugs you need or make the medicine work better -- and that reduces your risk for a heart attack.
