Flaxseed Drug Interactions

If certain medications are taken in conjunction with flaxseed, drug interactions may occur that could increase your risk for bleeding. Although this usually occurs when you take a lot of flaxseed, you should talk to your healthcare provider first before taking any medications while using flaxseed products. Some of the drugs that may lead to flaxseed interactions include aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and diabetes medicines.

 

An Introduction to Flaxseed Drug Interactions

Even though it is a "natural" product,
 flaxseed can theoretically interact with a few different medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to flaxseed interactions include:
 
  • Any medication taken by mouth
  • Aspirin (Bayer® and others)
  • Clopidogrel (Plavix®)
  • Diabetes medications
  • Heparin or heparin-like products, such as:

 

    • Dalteparin (Fragmin®)
    • Enoxaparin (Lovenox®)
    • Tinzaparin (Innohep®)

 

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as

 

 

  • Warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®).
