Side Effects of Fenofibrate

There are many potential side effects of fenofibrate, ranging from mild headaches to serious allergic reactions. The most common side effects include chest congestion, abdominal pain, back pain, and nausea. Although most fenofibrate side effects are minor, there are certain problems that should be reported to a healthcare professional immediately, such as unexplained muscle pain, fever, or vomiting.

 

Side Effects of Fenofibrate: An Overview

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with
 fenofibrate (Triglide™, Tricor®, Antara™, or Lofibra®). However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, they are generally minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or a healthcare professional. In previous research studies, up to 5 percent of people taking fenofibrate stopped their medicine because of side effects.
 
The use of fenofibrate has been associated with a rare but serious side effect known as rhabdomyolysis (serious breakdown of muscle). Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if they are accompanied by a fever or unusual tiredness (see Tricor and Muscle Pain).
