Crestor Drug Interactions

Ketoconazole
Theoretically, Crestor may decrease the level of steroid hormones in the body. Since ketoconazole can also lower these hormone levels, taking these medications together may increase your risk of related problems. Talk to your healthcare provider before combining ketoconazole with Crestor.

Niacin
Combining niacin with Crestor may increase the risk of serious muscle problems, such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis (see Crestor and Muscle Pain). Do not combine these medications without your healthcare provider's approval.

Other Statins
Crestor is a statin medication. Combining it with other statin medications may increase the risk of serious muscle problems, such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis (see Crestor and Muscle Pain). In general, you should not use more than one statin at the same time.

Protease Inhibitors
Taking Crestor with a protease inhibitor may increase the level of Crestor in your blood. This can increase your risk of Crestor side effects, including serious muscle problems, such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis (see Crestor and Muscle Pain). Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely and make necessary dosing adjustments.

Not all protease inhibitors interact with Crestor in a significant manner. Protease inhibitor combinations that include ritonavir seem to be most likely to interact with Crestor. In particular, the combinations of atazanavir and ritonavir or lopinavir and ritonavir are likely to interact, and the maximum recommended Crestor dosage for people taking such medications is 10 mg daily.
