Vascepa Medication Information

Adults who have extremely high triglyceride levels may receive a prescription drug called VascepaTM (icosapent ethyl). This medicine comes as capsules that are taken twice a day with food.

Vascepa is made from fish oil and is highly refined to contain a high percentage of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). This omega-3 fatty acid is thought to work by decreasing the liver's production of triglycerides and increasing the breakdown of triglycerides in the bloodstream.

Before taking Vascepa, make sure to review the safety information of the medication with your healthcare provider. For example, it may be dangerous to use this medicine if you are pregnant, have certain problems with your kidneys or liver, or regularly consume heavy amounts of alcohol.
