Prevalite Medicine

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Prevalite® (cholestyramine) for the following uses:
 
  • Treatment of high LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) in people with high total cholesterol
  • Relief of itching caused by partial biliary obstruction (a type of liver disease).
 
When used to lower cholesterol, Prevalite is designed for use in combination with lifestyle modifications. This includes a healthy diet low in cholesterol and saturated fats, limited alcohol use, weight loss, and exercise.
 
Though generally taken twice a day, Prevalite may be taken up to six times a day, based on your healthcare provider's recommendation. Common side effects include constipation, gas, and stomach discomfort.
