List of Food That Lowers Cholesterol

People trying to lower their cholesterol levels through dietary changes should focus on certain foods. Those that lower cholesterol contain plant sterols, plant stanols, or soluble fiber. Use the list provided in this article for ideas of foods to incorporate into a low cholesterol diet.

Are There Cholesterol Lowering Foods?

Cholesterol research has shown food that lowers cholesterol contains at least one of the following:
 
Until recently, foods high in soy protein were on the list of food that lowers cholesterol. Recent research, however, has shown this not to be the case.
 
There are also a number of foods that do not reduce cholesterol but do reduce the chances for developing heart disease.

Examples of foods that
 lower cholesterol include:
 
  • Oatmeal
  • Oat bran
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Prunes
  • Raspberries
  • Kidney beans
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Baked beans
  • Lentils.
 
Margarines and a number of other products are being fortified with cholesterol lowering plant stenols or sterols, including Benecol® and Take Control®.
