Cholesterol medications cannot "cure" high cholesterol per se, but they can help you to manage it. There are five major types: statins, bile acid sequestrants, nicotinic acid, fibrates, and cholesterol absorption inhibitors. Depending on your particular situation, your healthcare provider may combine cholesterol medications to enhance the effects, reverse or slow down atherosclerosis, and decrease the chance of a heart attack.
