Antara Dosage

Factors such as your age, what you are being treated for, and other medications you are taking can affect your Antara dosage. The suggested starting dose for high triglycerides is 43 mg to 130 mg a day; for high cholesterol, the recommended starting dose is 130 mg a day. If your treatment goals are not reached, or if side effects develop, your healthcare provider may choose to alter your Antara dosage accordingly.

Antara Dosage: An Introduction

The dose of Antara® (fenofibrate) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your age
  • The medical condition being treated
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking.

As with any drug, do not adjust your Antara dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Antara Dosage for High Triglycerides

The recommended starting dose for people with high triglycerides (fat-like substances) with normal LDL cholesterol levels is 43 mg to 130 mg once a day. Your healthcare provider will likely recommend that you return to recheck your triglyceride levels after four to eight weeks. If your triglycerides are still not at the desirable level, your healthcare provider may choose to increase your dosage or change your medication. The maximum daily dosage of Antara is 130 mg.

Antara Dosage for High Cholesterol

The recommended starting dosage for people with high cholesterol, with or without high triglycerides, is 130 mg once a day. Your healthcare provider will probably recommend that you return to recheck your cholesterol and triglyceride levels after several weeks. If you have not reached your cholesterol goals at this time, your healthcare provider may choose to add a new medication to your treatment.

Your healthcare provider may decide to decrease your dose if a side effect occurs or if your cholesterol levels fall significantly below the targeted goal.

If you are over the age of 65 or have severe kidney disease, your healthcare provider may decide to start you on a lower dose, such as 43 mg once a day. If your cholesterol levels are not at the desirable level after several weeks, your dose may be increased (but only after the effects of Antara on your kidney have been evaluated).
