Amiodarone (Cordarone®)
Taking both amiodarone and
Altoprev together may cause your body to metabolize the medicines differently than intended. This can cause significant reactions, including increasing the risk for developing serious muscle problems, such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely and make necessary dosing adjustments. Your
Altoprev dosage should not exceed 20 mg per day.
Verapamil (Calan®, Calan SR, Verelan®, Verelan PM, Isoptin®, Covera-HS®)
Taking both
verapamil and Altoprev together may cause your body to metabolize the medicines differently than intended. This can cause significant reactions, including increasing the risk for developing serious muscle problems, such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress more closely and make necessary dosing adjustments. Your Altoprev dosage should not exceed 20 mg per day.
Digoxin (Digitek®, Lanoxicaps®, Lanoxin®)
Taking both
digoxin and Altoprev appears to slightly increase the levels of digoxin in the blood. When starting Altoprev or increasing the Altoprev dosage, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely.
Grapefruit
It is recommended that people on Altoprev not drink grapefruit juice, eat grapefruit, or use grapefruit supplements because it can increase the levels of Altoprev in the blood. This can increase the chances for developing a serious muscle problem (myopathy or rhabdomyolysis), which can cause the kidneys to stop working
(see Altoprev and Muscle Pain).
If you are being treated with Altoprev and want to continue drinking grapefruit juice, talk to your doctor about other
cholesterol medications that you can take.
